dc.description.abstract It is conceviable that the periodic reversal of the Sun'd large-scale magnetic field and the concentration of the field in strong, thin flux tubes on small scales could bith result from the following likely processes near the base of the convection zone. It is likely that in a "base layer" of thickness ~10(power 5) km near the base of the convection zone a small part (~0.4%) of the energy flux below goes into an azimuthal magnetoaccoustic oscillation and once in ~ 11 y or so such an oscillation reaches a critical amplitude ~ 10 (power 4) cm s(power (-1)) when it undergoes a 'shock transition' to a cellular (azimuthal) convective mode. The shock transition will involve creation of electric current sheaths and magnetic flux sheaths of field intensity ~ 10 (power 4) G and thickness ~ 10 (power 2) km each near the 'nodal' meridian palnes. The electric current sheaths would provide the 'reserved' magnetic field on one side and the magnetic flux sheaths would eventually degenerated into 'cluster' of thousands of flux tubes of fluxes ~ 10 (power 18) Mx each. This model does need further detailed investigation; but if it is valid, it would be free from the difficulties of the earlier models of the solar magnetic cycle. en
