From a statistical analysis of ionogram data of Kodaikanal (dip 3.5 deg N) it is shown that, during years of high sunspot activity, the discontinuous or patchy occurrence of equatorial spread-F (ESF) depends on season. While ESF occurrence is usually continuous on nights during the June solstice, it is frequently discontinuous on nights during the equinoctial months. This seasonal pattern, which is similar to the one noticed in VHF scintillations by Dasgupta et al. (1983), is not evident during years of low sunspot activity. |
