Abstract: We examine the influence of radiative damping on the modes of an isothermal magnetized plasma. This investigation is an extension of earlier work by Hasan & Christensen-Dalsgaard (1992) and Banerjee, Hasan & Christensen-Dalsgaard (1995, 1996), which treated the effects of a uniform vertical magnetic field on the adiabatic modes of a stratified atmosphere. We focus on the properties of the Lamb mode and examine its interaction with a magnetic mode. We show that radiative dissipation can significantly alter the Lamb-mode frequency and lead to a enhanced damping of the waves at the avoided crossings in the k - w diagram. This mechanism could be important for wave damping in flux tubes on the Sun.
