Abstract: A possible mechanism for the direct generation of electromagnetic modes of frequencies near the electron plasma frequency, is suggested. The spatial variation of the interplanetary magnetic field seems to play an essential role for the excitation of the type III radio bursts. The values of the frequency drift rate and the characteristic rise time of the bursts compare well with the observations.
