The diagnostic potential of the Raman scattering of the electro-magnetic radiation has been realized in an all embracing manner in terrestrial phenomena. Our knowledge of the remote reaches of the universe comes almost entirely from the study of processes responsible for the production and propagation of the electromagnetic radiation. Here, the proposals emphasizing the role of the Raman scattering in diverse astrophysical systems are reviewed with the conclusion that the Raman scattering could turn out to be an extremely versatile tool for cosmic explorationen
