Abstract: Persistent and significant reductions in the strength of the equatorial electrojet, accompanied by poor development of the equatorial ionization anomaly, are noted to sometimes occur in association with negative ionospheric storms at midlatitude. These events are interpretable as the signatures of equatorial disturbance dynamo electric fields generated by storm-time modifications in global thermospheric circulation in response to high latitude energy inputs. These electric field disturbances do not necessarily follow enhanced geomagnetic activity.
