dc.description.abstract Observations were started at Leh in 1984 with a view to finding the possibility of setting up an astronomical observatory for infrared observations. Results of extinction measurements in UBV bands obtained on 12 nights during 1985-86 are presented. The average values of extinction coefficients are: k(v) = 0.20 + or - 0.13 (s.d.), k(b) = 0.29 + or - 0.04 and k(u) = 0.53 + or - 0.03 en
