dc.description.abstract The significance of the binary pulsar 1913+16 in establishing evidence for gravitational radiation emission from binary systems is described. It is pointed out that the system has enabled verification of general relativity predictions to a high level of precision. This article was written on the occasion of the 1993 Physics Nobel Prize awarded to Hulse and Taylor. en
