Abstract: | The ability of the photosphere models of Holweger and Mueller (1974) (HM) and Vernazza et al. (1976 and 1981) (VAL) to predict the profiles in the wings of the Balmer, Paschen, and Brackett lines in the disk-center solar spectrum is investigated. The results of sample computations for LTE (HM and VAL 1976) or non-LTE (VAL 1981) conditions are compared with published observational data in tables and graphs. It is shown that none of the models can account for the entire spectral range, the HM predictions being significantly more accurate for the Balmer series than for the Paschen and Brackett series, while the opposite is true for the VAL models |
