Equivalent widths of the CN red system in the solar spectrum are determined and compared with previous observational data in order to evaluate various published values for oscillator strength and dissociation energy. The Holweger and Mueller (1974) photospheric model with an oscillator strength of 1.9 x 10 to the -3rd and a CN dissociation energy between 7.66 and 7.76 is found to provide results consistent with the red system values observed in the photospheric spectrum. This range of dissociation energy values can also be used for the violet system without increasing UV opacityen
