An explanation for the invoice phase effect for absorption lines formed in a Rayleigh Scattering atmosphere is given in terms of multiple scattering. It is pointed out that the inverse phase effect is a function of the line profile chosen, with the Lorentz profile giving the maximum change and the Doppler profile the least.en
