We report optical infrared spectroscopy of sixteen bright IRAS "unidentified" sources with circumstellar envelopes in the region of the Ca II triplet lines. Several of these sources show low equivalent widths for the Ca II triplet lines. The implications of these for the spectral classification of these sources are discussed. IRAS 04101+3103 appears to be a Herbig Ae/Be star of spectral type A1e. The variations in the equivalent width of the Ca II triplet lines of IRAS 04184+2008 show it to be chromospherically very active. It is found to be a variable of Mira type with a period of approx. 322 days designated as DHK 42.en
