Planet formation in sun-like systems

Abstract

Recent discoveries of substellar and planetary-mass objects in orbit around other stars represent the most remarkable progress achieved in the search for extrasolar planetary systems. The evidence for their existence is summarised. The physical properties and orbital characteristics of these systems are discussed and compared with those of the solar system. The new discoveries raise new questions for the theories of planet formation as part of the star formation process.
