Atmospheric extinction and background light measurements have been carried out at Jammora for the period 1991 October-November, with a view to evaluate its suitability as a site for our new ground-based gamma-ray observatory. A value of (0.62 +/- 0.03) for the extinction coefficient and a value of (1.89 +/- 0.53) x 10/sup8/ photons/sq cm/s/sr for the flux of background night sky light, both averaged over the wavelength interval lambda = 310-560 nm, have been derived for the site under normal viewing conditionsen
