Abstract: The extinction coefficients in the J, H, K near-IR bands are presented that were derived for Kavalur during the years 1987, 1988, and 1989. Humidity and temperature observations made at Kavalur during these years are used to ascertain the most suitable months for IR observations. Mean values of the extinction coefficients in the J, H and K bands are 0.20, 0.13, and 0.19, respectively. Absolute humidity at Kavalur is lowest during the months of November, December, January, February, and March.
