Abstract:
Observational data are presented which show that geomagnetic effects occur in the dark hemisphere in association with solar flares. The characteristics of these events (referred to as NTSFEs) are found to be significantly different from those of solar flare effects (SFE) observed at the same station. NTSFEs are characterized by slower rise and slower decay compared to SFE events. Study of the characteristics of NTSFE events in relation to those of the associated solar X-ray flare events showed that the amplitude of the NTSFE is independent of the peak solar X-ray flux level in the two bands 1-8 A and 8-20 A.
